Is Spiti open in winter? How does the winter Spiti expedition work?

Yes. Spiti is reachable all year through Kinnaur on NH-5 (Shimla → Reckong Peo → Nako → Tabo → Kaza). The Manali side via Kunzum pass and Chandratal is closed from November to May. For winter we use 4×4 Scorpio, Fortuner or Crysta with snow chains and drivers who drive this road every winter.

What is the best time to visit Kinnaur?

April to June for apple blossom and pleasant weather, and September to November for apple harvest and golden autumn colours. December to February brings snowfall in Kalpa, Sangla and Chitkul. Avoid July – August if possible because of monsoon landslides.

Do I need a permit for Kinnaur and Spiti?

Indian nationals do not need a permit for the Kinnaur – Spiti route on NH-5. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for the stretch between Jangi and Sumdo, which can be arranged in Reckong Peo, Shimla or Kaza.
