About Kinnaur Kailash
Kinnaur Kailash is the holy mountain of Kinnaur, home to a 79-ft natural Shivling. Pilgrims trek to it every August, while travellers enjoy darshan of the peak from Kalpa all year.
The Kinnaur Kailash range rises to about 6,050 m above the Sutlej, opposite Kalpa. Its famous rock Shivling stands at around 4,800 m and changes colour through the day.
The Kinnaur Kailash yatra is held in August each year. The trek starts from Tangling near Powari, crosses Malingkhatta and Parvati Kund and takes 3–4 days return. It is a strenuous trek that needs good fitness and registration with the administration.
For most visitors, the best way to experience Kinnaur Kailash is sunrise from Kalpa, when the first light hits the peak.
